My DM story started in middle school when one of my close friends and cross country teammates lost his battle with leukemia. As a result, a few very dedicated students began a district-wide dance marathon event named Cam-A-THON, that grew from just those who knew Cameron personally to hundreds of students across our school district in just a few short years. I was able to experience dance marathon through their eyes and find the passion for it before going to college.

Once I got to UT Dallas and involved in the program as a social media coordinator, I realized that wasn't enough and there was more to be done. Meeting our Miracle Kids like Sim and Jackson relit the fire that was within and I began to dedicate all my free time to our program, picking up boothing shifts or helping teams get their goals accomplished on time when I was able to. Becoming Vice President last year allowed me to be even more involved in the program and attend DMLC in St. Louis, where I was able to share hopes and goals for our program while listening to others share theirs for their respective programs, taking new ideas back to our campus and try to implement them as needed. Now, in my 3rd year in the program, I get to share my vision for CometTHON with my team and take us to new heights and getting an entirely new class of students accustomed to the idea of DM to carry on and exceed anything we have done in our few years prior!

To me, Dance Marathon is more than just an event or an organization. It is a lifestyle full of hopes and dreams. Having a team like mine, and a community like ours, is something that will always stick with me. In the past, I've thought I'm doing this for my friend. But now I realize, I do it for the millions of children that need the support of the Dance Marathon community all across the country. For the Fight, For the Cure, and always For the Kids.

At first I joined Cometthon because it sounded like something fun to do. But it’s turned into something more than that. Cometthon feels like a family I love meeting people through it and I especially love that we get to be FTK while still having fun.

I joined CometTHON because I can relate to the kids and I want them to have a happy childhood like I was given. CometTHON gives me hope and it always brings a smile to my face even when I’m feeling down. Everyone is a family and I love making a difference!

Anum Effendi
Vice President of Marketing and Communications

Year: Senior

Major: Biology

I joined CometTHON at the beginning of my freshman year as part of Morale in 2017. After my first year, I saw that Dance Marathon was filled with so much passion from students and miracle kids dancing, enjoying the moment, and not having a single worry. Though these kids have been met with adversity in their lives, they still manage to be optimistic, uplifting, and inspirational to those around them. CometTHON to me is about fighting for those who, despite their own treatment and uncertainty, still have smiles on their faces and are enjoying living life in the moment.

Jamie Schmidt
Vice President of Operations

Major: Global Business

I joined CometTHON because my goal in life is to work for a better future and give back to others in anyway that I can. After hearing about what CometTHON does, I realized that this organization was something that I wanted to become a part of. It touches my heart to be a part of an organization that strives to give better lives to children in CMN hospitals. I am passionate about making this difference, and I love being able to do it alongside those who share similar passions!

I joined CometTHON because of the contributions this organization gives to the community. CometTHON serves to help children and their families in their times of need, all while bringing together the UT Dallas family. As a pre-med student, I hope to embody the values that CometTHON holds in my future and continue to advocate for Children’s Miracle Network. FTK!

I joined CometTHON because I had the amazing opportunity to serve as a team liaison my freshman year for my sorority! At the dance marathon, I felt the support, love, and positivity that CometTHON brings to the UT Dallas community and I knew I just had to be a part of it! And as always I am #forthekids today, tomorrow, and always!

I joined CometTHON because it’s centered around being ‘for the kids’. I’ve always thought that I would have to be much older to make a lasting impact in someone’s life, but CometTHON’s initiative gives happiness and strength to numerous kids with pediatric illnesses right now! Being for the kids inspires me to work hard and I’m excited for this coming year!
